A lot of people have asked me why I look like a hippie, or told me to “get a haircut” On Instagram I gained the nickname #AKJesus because of my bearded messiah-like appearance. What I haven’t explained is that a thing that started on a whim ended up turning into something much more. I have resisted cutting my hair for more than the past year because I plan on donating it to Wigs For Kids, a nonprofit organization that provides free handmade hair pieces to sick children who have lost their own hair. I can only imagine if it were my little girl who lost her hair to cancer what it would mean to have a quality wig so she could look normal again. It’s a very small effort for me that can mean the world to a child, why wouldn’t I do it? Most assume that I am donating to a popular charity “Locks of Love” however not many are aware of the controversy surrounding them. Locks of Love sells the majority of the donations they receive for profit and only about 10% of the hair actually goes to help children. Remember, always do your research!
I was also inspired by my friends Rich and Charissa, one who donated and the other who received bone marrow transplants. Because of the close genetic match required to be a marrow donor it’s very hard to find candidates for a procedure that is likely to save someone’s life. A lot of people are also afraid of donating because of the “excruciating pain” associated with donation. This is mostly a myth. The majority of donations occur through peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) much like donating plasma. Liquid marrow donations are made using local or general anesthesia so the patient feels no needle injections and only general soreness after. It’s a small price to pay to help someone in need. My haircut is scheduled for October 16th and I will be sure to document the procedure. There are many ways you can help people, and most of them require very little effort. This is just my example. What have you done?
Now for a lighter note here is a video of me shaking my hair
